81-366 Hawk

81-366 Hawk, originally uploaded by saralonde.

I am not a good bird photographer, not sure I have the patience. But when a young hawk sets up a vigil in your backyard it's hard to resist. His interest in our fish pond kept him on the branch a little longer than normal while I attempted to sneak up on him, but as you can see, he kept an eye on me.

I've been busy lately scanning old slides and transferring them to my computer. I was struck by the colors of the old Kodachrome and Ektachrome films and feeling a little sad that the last processor stopped work on that discontinued film.

This is not an old slide, but an attempt to recreate that feeling.

I know some people call them "rats with wings", but their colors are rather beautiful.

Feeling housebound because of the cold, I started playing in photoshop. I learned a few things, but it's easy to get carried away...

"A Little Bit of Winter"

"A Little Bit of Winter", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Trying to get a winter landscape, I pulled my car off the side of a country road and walked around looking for an opportunity. Despite all the snow, I forgot to wear boots (!) and my frozen feet were not willing to leave the slush on the side of the road to tramp in the snow. Because of that, there is a little more sky and foreground than I wanted and my horizon is too centered.

Guess I'm not willing to sacrifice frostbite for my "art" ;-).

Day 283-365 "CSI: Backyard"

Sitting in my family room, I heard a loud "thud" on my window. As I approached the window; I saw a large bird fly away. Thinking he only stunned himself, I glanced at the ground only to see this bird. It looks as if it broke its neck instantly, poor thing.

So it's death would not be in vain, I played homicide detective and photographed the point of impact and body. Considered a chalk line, but no chalk.

There is talk of suicide, but there was no note. Perhaps the other bird has something to do with it. A lover's quarrel? A planned house robbery gone horribly wrong? I suppose we'll never know.

Tragic to die so young.
