Day 119-365 "Dogwood Blossoms"

Day 119-365 "Dogwood Blossoms", originally uploaded by saralonde.

From one of our newly planted trees.

More flowers, but at least not yellow!

HBW!

Day 120-365 Violets

Day 120-365 Violets, originally uploaded by saralonde.

There is a little patch of violets in our lawn that pop up every spring. This year instead of mowing them down, my husband left them for me to photograph before they disappeared. They are so tiny that only a macro lens will do them justice.

Day 118-365 "Ode to Dandelions"

Day 118-365 "Ode to Dandelions", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Yeah, flowers again ;-)! And it's a weed!

I love dandelions in the spring. Their little yellow heads are so cheerful and sweet making you forget the long ugly taproot underneath. They are sneaky that way. But they conjure up memories of my children's grubby little hands offering fresh picked flowers to me, the same as I did for my own mother. Believe me, there are few gifts in the world that delight a mother more.

Simple pleasures: holding one under your chin to see if you like butter, blowing the wispy white seeds into the air and watching the wind catch and twirl them around like little ballerinas, tucking them behind your ear or in your hair as golden floral jewels.

Day 117-365 "Antiqued Daffodils"

I was not going to do any more flower shots, but, what can I say? It's Spring and I love spring flowers. Might as well just go with it before they all fade.

Well, a fake vintage polaroid anyway, ;-)!

Day 114-365 "Guess what we'll be doing this weekend?"

This comes under the "quick snapshot for a 365" category.

Sunny spring weather means shredded bark delivery. We have a big yard, so those little plastic bags of mulch you get at the garden centers don't do much here :-).

Love how the warm mulch steams in the air. One early and cool morning I was shoveling it up from the pile and came up with a snake. Guess he was trying to keep warm. He and I both slithered/ran away from each other.

Day 113-365 "Vintage Handkerchiefs"

Mostly my mother's. Not sure why I kept them, other than I found the fabric interesting.

Day 111-365 "Stormy Skies"

Day 111-365 "Stormy Skies", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Desaturated this a bit until just a little color showed through. It was essentially a b&w shot to begin with.

Day 109-365 "Bad ;-) Lunch"

Day 109-365 "Bad ;-) Lunch", originally uploaded by saralonde.

I've been pretty good about eating healthy lately (of course there was that stop at Wendy's yesterday, but I blame my husband for that ;-)), but faced with a decision to buy lunch today I saw a fave summer treat was back: Ice cream hand-dipped in (lots!) of chocolate and rolled in almonds.

What's the point of being a grownup if you can't indulge childhood fantasies?

Day 108-365 "Unloved House"

Day 108-365 "Unloved House", originally uploaded by saralonde.

A long drive into the country today yielded a few old abandoned houses by the side of the road.

Day 106-365 "The Bees are Out!", originally uploaded by saralonde.

...which may be good news or bad news depending on how you feel about bees ;-).
Wonderful sunny day today - I guess my stop sign yesterday was seen by Mother Nature - so I wondered out to take some pics. Bees everywhere! So I settled down to get a few. Would have been much better without the breeze and somewhat uncooperative insects, but still better than snow :-)!

Day 104-365 "falling back on the classics because it's easier than admitting all this modern stuf is a little bit baffling" - Story People

Decided to pull out an old camera today and do some TtV. This was with my Argus which has a slightly dirtier lens. I usually use my 50mm 1.4 lens, but for this one I built a new and longer box and tried it with the Canon 100mm macro.

Guess I'm still intrigued with white backgrounds, LOL!

Day 103-365 "Sweet Peppers"

Day 103-365 "Sweet Peppers", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Last month I seemed to be obsessed with black backgrounds. Lately I seem to have turned to white. It may have something to do with spring :-). This white bowl is intriguing me. I keep thinking of things I can put in it and photograph. Raided the fridge for this one :-).

Day 101-365 Picking out a tree", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Drove to a large nursery this morning to pick out a few dogwoods for our yard. A bit muddy and cool, but definitely a feeling like spring!

Day 100-365 "Chocolate Eggs"

Day 100-365 "Chocolate Eggs", originally uploaded by saralonde.

If you're going to eat eggs, chocolate is the best way to go, ;-)!

Day 99-365 "Old Toys"

Day 99-365 "Old Toys", originally uploaded by saralonde.

These are little windup toys from Germany made just after WWII.The little bird pecks at the ground, the Scottie and the red convertible run amok (!), mouse daddy lifts up his gleeful baby into the air and the clown just sort of jitters. He used to lift his arms with a bunch of balloons, but they were lost over the years. The umbrella was a silly add-on that doesn't really belong.
They were sent to me by my grandmother when I was a toddler, and although worn and tired, they have wonderful memories.

Day 98-365 "Coffee Break"

Day 98-365 "Coffee Break", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Wednesdays my daughter and I meet for lunch (sushi and edamame), do a little shopping and sometimes stop for a coffee at the local coffee shop. We like to go to the small local places trying to do our part to help keep them in business.

Day 97-365 "Perfume Bottle"

Day 97-365 "Perfume Bottle", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Did you ever have a vision in your head of something you want to shoot and end up with something completely different? That's what happened here. I started out with a stark picture of the bottle on a reflective black background and ended up with this. Oh, well.
I'm still going to try the original idea later.

Day 96-365 "Sunshine on a stem"

Day 96-365 "Sunshine on a stem", originally uploaded by saralonde.

It's supposed to snow a bit tonight and tomorrow, and although my daffodils will do their brave best, I know they'll have a bit of burned edges when it's over. So I had to take a daffodil pic again.

Day 93-365 Restaurant Ceiling

Day 93-365 Restaurant Ceiling, originally uploaded by saralonde.

They always say to look up, look down and all around, you never know what interesting things you may find to photograph. Unfortunately, my little point and shoot shows it's limitations in dark places with an unfortunate amount of noise.

Day 92-365 Daffodil?

Day 92-365 Daffodil?, originally uploaded by saralonde.

Daffodil, jonquil, narcissus? I know they are slightly different, but I can never remember which is which

It's spring, I'm in a flower mood!

365: March 2009

365: March 2009, originally uploaded by saralonde.

I like seeing a retrospective of what I shot over the month. Apparently I was in love with black backgrounds, kitchen implements and food ;-)! Well I started a diet this month so I guess that explains the last two. And black is supposed to make you look thinner, LOL.

Day 88-365 Hockey

Day 88-365 Hockey, originally uploaded by saralonde.

My daughter's boyfriend had a hockey game today.

They really need to clean the glass there :-(. Look at my wonderful glare!

Day 87-365 Pittsburgh

Day 87-365 Pittsburgh, originally uploaded by saralonde.

Friday was a trip to the past with a one room schoolhouse. This is a polar opposite: Towering glass reaching for the sky.
Wonderful reflective buildings. I'm sure everyone that comes to this city photographs them.

Day 86-365 "One Room Schoolhouse"

This is a one room school house that was used in the area I live up until about 50 years ago. There were a few left stil standing when the township moved this one next to the community center to serve as a museum. This area has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 20 years and now has one of the larger school districts around.

It's nice to remember there were simpler times.

Day 85-365 Raindrops

Day 85-365 Raindrops, originally uploaded by saralonde.

Rain, rain for the past few days. It can really make it difficult to come up with a new shot everyday. I went outside under an umbrella to see what I could find and, lo and behold! a tiny miniature daffodil was showing it's head!

Shooting the darn thing was another matter though. It was very tiny, behind the attached grill, surrounded by mud and next to impossible to get a good shot of it. Pulled out a macro lens, tried to hold steady crouched with feet in the mud and snapped a few.

Inside on my computer I find one shot with a slight refraction in the raindrops. Not perfect, but just seeing the first blooming flower was enough :-)!

Day 84-365 Books

Day 84-365 Books, originally uploaded by saralonde.

Day 83-365 "Trees are Budding!"

Day 83-365 "Trees are Budding!", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Taking the little A590 out for a spin, I decided to try taking a shot using the LCD to compose. This is one nice thing this p&s offers that I don't have with my dslr; I can raise the camera above my head, aim and shoot.

Not an example of wonderful composition, but the dof isn't bad!

Day 82-365 "Point & Shoot Self-Portrait"

I've never felt comfortable with point and shoot cameras. I don't like composing in screens on the back or having the camera decide my settings for me. But doing a 365 project has changed my feelings somewhat. I've missed so many shots because I didn't want to lug my dslr with me.

So I decided to investigate buying a small camera. It had to be easily thrown into a purse or pocket, have an optical viewfinder plus a manual setting. And it had to be inexpensive. And have Image Stabilization. Do I want too much ;-)?

This led me to the Canon A590 IS. Only $109 at Newegg including a case and 4 gig card. Do I love it? No, I like my dslr better, but I do like it.

So the above is one of the first shots I took when it arrived Monday. Even though I really wanted manual settings, this was taken in Auto mode. The little camera intimidated me a bit :-)!

Day 81-365 "Spring is Gently Coming"

...and the willows are starting to green.

Day 80-365 "Zoo Balloon"

Day 80-365 "Zoo Balloon", originally uploaded by saralonde.

This past weekend was the 150th anniversary of the oldest zoo in the US.

Day 79-365 "Pear Martini"

Day 79-365 "Pear Martini", originally uploaded by saralonde.

No, I never had one of these either, but it was pretty good.

Not exactly your typical first day of Spring shot, but I think of it as a toast to the change of seasons ;-).

Really I was trying a few lighting ideas late in the evening which didn't work out as I had hoped (notice the glare).

Day 71-365 "Jury Duty", originally uploaded by saralonde.

Had to wait home until I took this. No cameras in courtrooms! But after waiting all day, there was a plea bargain in the homicide case and all potential jurors went home. Sitting on a jury might have been interesting, but after a really boring day, I'm glad I'm done for 3 years.
